Celebrating the largest product introduction in the company's history, Apple Computer, Inc. announced the shipment of its 10 millionth Apple Macintosh computer and unveiled eight new personal computer products, including five Macintosh desktop systems, a color PowerBook, and two low-cost laser printers. The announcements--made in conjunction with MacWorld Tokyo, the largest MacWorld Exposition in the world with more than 100,000 attendees--mark the first time Apple has launched products for the international market at a venue outside of the United States.
Products introduced include the Apple Macintosh Color Classic, the Apple Macintosh LC III, the Apple Macintosh Centris 610 and 650, the Apple Macintosh Quadra 800, the Apple Macintosh Powerbook 165c, and the Apple LaserWriter Select 310 and 300 laser printers.
"Apple is introducing more products this year than in any two years combined in its history," said Fred Forsyth, senior vice president of Apple's Macintosh Systems Division. "This means our users have more choice than ever before. We're listening carefully to what our customers tell us they value most, and we're moving quickly to incorporate these features into the product line. Today, we're bringing the power of the Motorola 68040 microprocessor to a new midrange desktop line, and adding color to our award-winning PowerBook and popular compact Classic design. And, we're breaking new ground in price-performance with our Select laser printer series."
Apple Macintosh Color Classic
An enhanced version of Apple's popular, all-in-one computer design, the affordable Color Classic offers exceptional color, greater expandability and new ease-of-use features, including Macintosh LC expansion capability and an energy-saving feature. Its suggested retail price (SRP) in the United States is $1,389.
Apple Macintosh LC III
A fast, versatile and affordable slim-line computer, the new Macintosh LC III delivers increased performance and new features that improve upon Apple's best-selling Macintosh LC II. The LC III provides nearly twice the performance of the LC II. The U.S. SRP of the base configuration of the LC III is $1,349.
Apple Macintosh Centris Line
The new Macintosh Centris line includes midrange personal computers that offer fast performance, flexibility, and expandability to mainstream business and professional users. It includes two new systems--the Macintosh Centris 610 and Macintosh Centris 650--that feature the high-performance Motorola 68040 microprocessor at lower price points. The base configuration of the Macintosh Centris 610 has a U.S. SRP of $1,859. The Macintosh Centris 650 has a U.S. SRP of $2,699.
Apple Macintosh Quadra 800
The newest member of its high-performance line of computers, the Macintosh Quadra 800 becomes Apple's most affordable Quadra ever. It features a new mini-tower desktop or deskside design and delivers more than a 30 percent increase in performance over the current Apple Macintosh PowerBook 165c The PowerBook 165c combines high performance and a sleek ergonomic design with an innovative passive matrix display that provides the sophisticated color computing capabilities users expect from a Macintosh. The PowerBook 165c shares the distinctive, all-in-one design of the PowerBook 145, 160 and 180. Its base configuration has a U.S. SRP of $3,399.
Apple LaserWriter 600 And Macintosh Duo System Upgrades
Apple also announced that it is upgrading the standard configuration of the Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 to include 8MB of RAM. This move makes 600 dot-per-inch (dpi) resolution and Apple's PhotoGrade technology standard, built-in features of the printer. At its introduction on Jan. 6, 1993, the Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 shipped with 4MB of RAM on the controller board. All of the new products will be offered worldwide through Apple authorized resellers. The Macintosh Color Classic will also be offered through the Apple Catalog in the United States. New LaserWriter Select 300/310
Apple Computer, Inc. continued to expand its family of high-quality laser printers with the introduction of the Apple LaserWriter Select series of midrange printers. The LaserWriter Select 300 and the LaserWriter Select 310, the first printers to debut in this line, bring a new level of price and performance to customers seeking professional quality printing. They are designed to provide advanced print quality, convenient paper handling, and greater affordability. With the introduction of these printers, Apple has enabled every printer in its LaserWriter family with sophisticated grayscale capabilities so that users at every level can easily incorporate images into everyday documents.
LaserWriter Select Series
Both products are powered by a Fuji Xerox 5-page-per-minute laser engine and share the same compact industrial design. The printers come standard with a letter cassette tray that holds 250 sheets of paper for automatic printing of large jobs, and a manual paper feed for small jobs requiring personal attention. An optional 250- or 500-sheet paper tray can be added to the LaserWriter Select series printers for added convenience. A 50-sheet multipurpose tray is also available that holds up to 50 sheets of paper or up to five envelopes. With all the paper feed options in use, the printer can hold up to 800 sheets of paper. And, like all other LaserWriter printers, the Select series features the all-in-one toner cartridge for easy and clean maintenance.
LaserWriter Select 300
The LaserWriter Select 300 is an expandable laser printer for individual users. Its 300 dot-per-inch (dpi) resolution, combined with FinePrint edge-smoothing technology and 39 scalable TrueType fonts, ensures high-quality, professional looking results in letters, reports, memos, and charts. For users who want more sophisticated capabilities, the printer can be upgraded to support Apple's advanced PhotoGrade technology, which produces near-photographic quality grayscale images. PhotoGrade provides the equivalent of 1,000 dpi printing with 91 levels of gray--30 percent more than was previously available in other printers. Or, for users who require PostScript compatibility, the printer can be upgraded to support Adobe PostScript. With Apple's new GrayShare software, users can share the printer with other Macintosh computers. GrayShare allows the LaserWriter Select 300 to be shared among users over an AppleTalk, TokenTalk or EtherTalk network. The LaserWriter Select 300 can be used with any Apple Macintosh personal computer with at least 1MB of RAM, System 6.0.7 (with TrueType INIT) or higher, and a hard disk drive. For optimum performance, Apple recommends using 4MB or more of RAM with System 7 or higher.
LaserWriter Select 310
The LaserWriter Select 310 is the most affordable PostScript printer Apple has ever introduced. Powered by Advanced Micro Device's AM29205 RISC processor, it offers fast, efficient output for documents with boproductivity needs. Because it has Adobe's PostScript software, it is also an affordable choice for individuals who require PostScript compatibility. The printer comes standard with 13 scalable Adobe Type 1 fonts in ROM and the same 13 TrueType fonts on disk so that users get great looking type on their display and on the printed page. It is also compatible with any other of Adobe's Type 1 PostScript fonts. Macintosh or Windows users can connect easily to the printer via either its built-in serial or parallel connections. Additional interface cards or software drivers are not needed. The LaserWriter Select 310 can be used with any Apple Macintosh personal computer running System 6.07 (with TrueType INIT) or higher, any version of System 7, or any personal computer running Windows.
 
New Find Utility For System 7
Abbott Systems, makers of CanOpener, today announced FindAll, a powerful find utility for System 7. FindAll searches any Mac and instantly lists ALL found files in ONE window. The user can then:
• Browse or print the list to audit the contents of any machine.
• Launch anything, anytime from one place and eliminate time wasting
searches.
• Automatically see and remove duplicates to get more disk space.
FindAll has built in searches for applications, control panels and desk accessories, but users can define their own search criteria and add them to FindAll's menu. For example, a user could add a menu item "Recent Excel Docs" which instantly finds and lists all Excel documents modified after a certain date etc.

MacIntercomm Lite
Mercury Systems today announced a new product titled MacIntercomm Lite. The product is a smaller version of its full-featured communications program MacIntercomm, and is intended for bundling with modems directly from modem manufacturers and mail order hourses. The product is shipping immediately, and several major Macintosh modem manufacturers are expected to announce bundling agreements in the near future.
MacIntercomm Lite will allow users who have just purchased a new modem to automatically enjoy the benefits of telecommunications with features far outweighing any previous offering in bundled modem packages, and these users also have the option of upgrading to the complete version of MacIntercomm for only $49.95, a 60% savings off the retail price of $129.95. The features of MacIntercomm not included in MacIntercomm Lite are the Kermit and CIS B Plus file transfer protocols, advanced scripting, VT220 emulation, and support for the Macintosh Communications Toolbox.
Mercury broke new ground at the MacWorld Expo in August, 1992 when it revealed its program allowed pre-emptive multitasking for Macintosh file transfers letting users do absolutely anything else on their computer without affecting the speed of a file transfer and vice versa. MacIntercomm file transfers do not fail or even slow down simply because the user is involved in a complex task in the foreground application, and MacIntercomm Lite also supports this.
Existing programs in the communications market claim to run in the background, but if the foreground application is processor-intensive (such as a spreadsheet, compression program, database, or a game), other file transfers will grind to a halt and usually fail. Not so with MacIntercomm. Pre- emptive multitasking is usually found only on very expensive mainframe computers, but Mercury's technology allows them to integrate this into the current Macintosh operating system. The program is compatible with both System 7 and System 6. The company also announced that they are developing several other Macintosh programs using this technology, and that negotiations are under way with other major software developers to license this technology.
MacIntercomm Lite supports the most popular terminal emulations including VT-52, VT-102, PC-ANSI, and TTY; moreover, it is one of the only programs to support full 16-color emulation. A complete suite of file transfer protocols includes Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem-g, and Zmodem. It also supports a full set of macros for each service, and a scrollback buffer that can extend up to 20 MB by the user's specification using disk space instead of being limited to available memory.
An Auto Dial window keeps track of all the systems the user calls. The user can specify which systems to dial, and MacIntercomm will automatically redial each system in order until a connection is made. It will remember this list between restarts, so that the user can be sure to call important systems. A Smart Dial feature adjusts phone numbers automatically based upon area code, an indispensable feature for Macintosh PowerBook users. The combination of the Auto Dial and Smart Dial features results in one of the most advanced dialing systems ever.
Mercury Systems will provide technical support for both of its products on CompuServe (72360,1420), America Online (MercuryTec), GEnie (MercurySys), and the Internet (mercury@cerf.net).
MacIntercomm Lite runs on any Macintosh computer with at least 1 MB of RAM. System 6.0.4 or higher. For modem communications, a modem with cable is required. Supports any modem. Mercury Systems is still offering a special direct purchase price of $79.95 on the complete version of MacIntercomm until March 31, 1993, and it is also available through most major mail order houses.

Online Servant Upgrade
The new version of Online Servant, the shareware Mac front-end for GEnie, is here! File #3573 in the MacPRO Software Library (M480;3), is the complete version of Online Servant 1.26c, for both new users and upgraders. Servant handles GEnie mail and bulletin boards with automatic online sessions. Command selections, reading, and entering replies are all done offline.
Online Servant is "Open Beta" software. Many bugs from 1.25 have been fixed, plus other minor changes, over 60 in all. Requires HyperCard 2.0v2 or later or HyperCard Player. Needs a 4 Meg Mac under System 7 or 2.5 Meg Mac with System 6 (non-Multi-Finder). If you have 1.25, please download the complete file and use only the new stacks (rename or trash your old Servant stacks). You can import your Main Settings and Mail Directory from your old version.
